American shakedown: Police won’t charge you, but they’ll grab your money

There’s a shakedown going on in the U.S., and the perps are in uniform.

Across America, law enforcement officers — from federal agents to state troopers right down to sheriffs in one-street backwaters — are operating a vast, co-ordinated scheme to grab as much of the public’s cash as they can; “hand over fist,” to use the words of one police trainer.

As the Canadian government notes, there is no law against carrying it here or any legal limit on how much you can carry. But  if you’re on an American roadway with a full wallet, in the eyes of thousands of cash-hungry cops you’re a rolling ATM.

If Notre Dame can’t stay clean, who can?

Why do we keep going along with the charade of big-time college football being anything other than a huge business built on the backs of very human young men, many of whom want nothing to do with school?

The NCAA and the major conferences are moving toward stipends for basketball and football players, not out of the goodness of their hearts but because they can see the courts eventually will make them. Many of these kids should be paid like the professionals they are. It’s obscene that Alabama coach Nick Saban will earn $6.9 million this year while his players will earn nothing. Those players make tons of money for the university. The same goes for the players at Notre Dame.

But those three officers are dressed and outfitted such that they could as easily be storming into an ISIS safe house in Iraq. Actually, they are on the streets of an American city, clad in combat gear, squaring off against a nonviolent protestor in a t-shirt and jeans with both of his hands raised over his head. It is easy to see how visuals like these could dissuade people from taking to the streets to assemble in protest of police shootings, as is their moral and Constitutional right.

Violent, Genocidal Anti-Palestinian Rhetoric Moving to US?

These blood-curdling statements, while anathema to many, are made with impunity in Israel because there is widespread support–or at least toleration–among the Jewish population. The statements are not confined to religious sectors of society, but are also flourishing on social media platforms, where average Israelis call for Palestinians to be ethnically-cleansed. In the streets of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Beersheba, groups of Israeli Jews led by anti-miscegenationist activists march through town chanting “Death to Arabs!” and “Death to leftists!,” assaulting anyone who fits the bill.
